Pompeo Remarks on Court Ruling for Kansas Redistricting

WASHINGTON, DC – Late Thursday evening, a panel of three federal judges released its plan for new political lines in Kansas congressional, state House, state Senate and State Board of Education districts.  The three-person panel was tapped to determine the new lines, based on new census numbers, due to the stalemate that the Kansas state legislature reached earlier this spring.

Before the decision, Kansas’ Fourth Congressional District was carrying an additional 6,900 residents, which put it out of balance per federal redistricting rules.  As part of Thursday night’s decision, KS-04 lost Montgomery County, while it gained six new counties.  While residents of the Fourth Congressional District in newly added Barber, Pratt, Stafford, Edwards, Kiowa, Comanche, part of Pawnee, and the rest of Greenwood will be eligible to vote in the primary and general election for this seat, the new federal congressional district boundaries will become fully effective when the 113th Session of Congress is sworn in, in January 2013.

Congressman Mike Pompeo, representative for the Fourth Congressional District of Kansas, released the following statement on the heels of the decision.

“I am saddened by the loss of the good people of Montgomery County from Kansas’ Fourth District, but I welcome all residents of the newly added counties of Barber, Pratt, Stafford, Edwards, Kiowa, Comanche, Pawnee, and the northern half of Greenwood.  I am glad that the lingering issue of redistricting boundaries is finally settled.  I look forward to continuing my work in Congress and on the Committee on Energy and Commerce, on behalf of families in South Central Kansas.  I look forward to getting to know the newest constituents of Kansas’ Fourth Congressional District in the days and weeks ahead,” stated Pompeo.
