Pompeo Introduces Bill to End Iran’s Nuclear Program Before Allowing Sanctions Relief

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) last week introduced H.R. 4344, the Ending Iran's Nuclear Weapon Program Before Sanctions Relief Act of 2016, which would require a report on the possible military dimensions (PMD) of Iran’s nuclear program and prohibit the Obama administration from lifting any sanctions on Iran until this regime has verifiably ended all military dimensions of its nuclear program.

“Given the glaring deficiencies of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) PMD report and Iran’s continued brazen missile tests and rocket launches, Congress must take serious action to protect the American people,” said Pompeo, who serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.  “With the impending implementation of the president’s dangerous nuclear agreement with Iran, the world’s largest state sponsor of terror, it is absolutely unacceptable that we still do not have a thorough understanding of this regime’s past weaponization efforts.  This information is critical to our ability to detect and thwart future efforts by Iran to restart its nuclear program.”

This legislation would require the Director of National Intelligence and Secretary of Energy to conduct a complete investigation of the possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear program and submit a report to Congress.  The Obama administration would be prohibited from providing sanctions relief to Iran until at least 90 days after Congress receives the report and approves of sanctions relief.

Pompeo introduced the bill along with Reps. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.), Mike Turner (R-Ohio), and Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.).  It is a companion bill to Sen. Kelly Ayotte’s (R-N.H.) S. 2429, co-sponsored by Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), John Thune (R-S.D.), and James Inhofe (R-Okla.).
