Pompeo on Obama Administration’s Changes to Visa Waiver Program Favoring Iran

WICHITA – Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) today released the following statement after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced changes to the U.S. visa waiver program that favor Iran.  Pompeo sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry on December 22, 2015, after Kerry indicated he would not adhere to a visa waiver bill President Obama signed just days before.

Pompeo said, “As I stated in my previous letter to Secretary Kerry: ‘Waiving restrictions on the visa waiver program for persons who have traveled to Iran or who hold Iranian citizenship would put U.S. citizens at risk.’  This is exactly what the Obama administration has just done—in defiance of Congress.  After the barbaric acts of violence in Paris and San Bernadino, there should be no hesitation in closing loopholes in the U.S. visa system to keep terrorists from coming into our country.  But instead, DHS has announced dangerous changes to our nation’s visa waiver program that prioritize the business interests of Iran – the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism – over the safety of the American people.

“In a January 13, 2016 reply to my letter, the State Department asserted, ‘The administration will carry out the law that Congress passed and the president signed.’  This simply did not happen.  The Obama administration’s deceitfulness and appeasement continues to mount, as our country’s security suffers.  President Obama must reverse course and follow the law he agreed to just weeks ago.”
